History
Rolex, a distinguished Swiss watch brand and manufacturer, is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. Initially founded in 1905 in London by German entrepreneur Hans Wilsdorf and his future brother-in-law Alfred Davis, the company adopted the Rolex brand name for its watches in 1908, eventually becoming Rolex Watch Co. Ltd.
In 1915, Post-World War I, economic challenges led the company to relocate its operations to Geneva. In 1920, Hans Wilsdorf established Montres Rolex SA in Geneva, later simplifying it to Rolex SA. Since 1960, the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation, a private family trust, has owned Rolex.
Rolex SA, along with its subsidiary Montres Tudor SA, plays a significant role in the luxury watch industry by designing, manufacturing, distributing, and servicing wristwatches under the acclaimed Rolex and Tudor brands. In a noteworthy development in 2023, Rolex agreed to acquire Bucherer, a long-time retail partner, further strengthening its retail network and global presence.
Although famously known as a Swiss watchmaker today, Rolex originally began as a British company. It made the strategic decision to move its headquarters to Switzerland, benefiting from the nation's renowned watchmaking heritage and favorable business environment.
